Dry Martini

The Martini is Rachel’s favourite way to drink Sky Wave Gin; she even prefers it to the classic G&T. Sky Wave Signature London Dry Gin adds a fabulous extra dimension to this classic cocktail, with its slightly spicy lingering finish – take it as dry as you dare – and our Liberation edition is also wonderful in this, the most famous of all cocktails.

The Martini screams of sophistication, from the heady style of the 1920s through to its iconic status as James Bond’s drink of choice – although we believe it should be stirred, not shaken – sorry James!

You will need:

Method:

  1. Add some of the ice to the martini glass to chill it whilst you mix the cocktail, or use a glass straight from the freezer
  2. Mix the Sky Wave Gin, the vermouth and the bitters in a tall thin highball glass with plenty of ice
  3. Stir vigorously for at least a minute
  4. Empty the ice (if used) out of your martini glass, and strain your cocktail into it
  5. Garnish with an olive or a twist of lemon
So how do you make it drier? Use less vermouth. Some recipes even suggest spraying the glass with vermouth from an atomiser, or swirling the vermouth around the glass and throwing it away before adding the gin and bitters mixture; after all, it was Noel Coward who said, ‘A perfect martini should be made by filling a glass with gin, then waving it in the general direction of Italy!’ And he should know.
